Skin Pigmentation

Skin pigmentation can be a problem for people of all ages and skin types. Our skin contains melanin to give it colour. This can sometimes become concentrated in one area of the skin, causing pigmented areas that can be dark and noticeable. These high concentrations of melanin can occur for a number of reasons, including hereditary factors, age and overexposure to the sun.

How can it be treated?

Skin pigmentation can be significantly reduced or removed with our Vasculight system using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Each pulse is designed to produce specific light wavelengths which target the skin cells which contain an excessive concentration of melanin. As the IPL technology uses targeted pulses of light, it will not destroy or damage surrounding tissue. By rapidly absorbing the light energy these high concentrations of melanin break down and the pigmented granules are destroyed. This causes a reduction in the appearance of skin pigmentation and leaves skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

>

We always look at the extent of skin damage before deciding how many treatments you will need. This will be discussed with you by a nurse practitioner at your consultation. The amount of light energy emitted by Vasculight IPL technology can be tailored to suit the skin’s requirements. As such, every patient’s treatment plan will be individually tailored. Due to the high specification of this laser, you will need fewer treatments with us than if you were being treated using an inferior machine.

In addition to the IPL, a combination of treatments including microdermabrasionskin peels and specialist products may also be required to produce optimal results.

Will It Hurt?

>

The treatment does not hurt, although some patients notice a sensation similar to the snap of an elastic band or a sting with every laser flash. The treatment will not disrupt your daily routine and you should be able to go back to work straight away. Some patients may experience redness of the treated area: this will subside within a few hours and can be covered with make up if necessary.

When Will I See the Results?

>

Following the first treatment you should see a reduction in pigmentation and notice that your skin is smoother and feels rejuvenated. Improvements will become more apparent after multiple treatments. Individual treatment plans and expectations will be discussed with a nurse practitioner at consultation.
